William James Moriarty[]

William James Moriarty is Sherlock's ex-arch nemesis and the only person who is his equal.

The two start out as enemies on a formal level, the mastermind criminal and the detective who wants to catch him. On a personal level, William and Sherlock get along and understand each other from the beginning, so much so that Sherlock openly admits to him that he would like William to be the criminal he's chasing.[1]

He is visibly excited by the prospect of William being the Lord of Crime, heart racing at the idea[2] and blushing when William teases him.[1][3] In return, William always anticipated Sherlock figuring out his identity and solving the mystery.[2] When Sherlock discovers the truth, he's extremely delighted and reiterates that he needed it to be William and that he didn't want it to be anyone else.[4]

It's later revealed that their first meeting was detrimental for Sherlock and he felt like William was the first person to truly understand him.[5] After reading William's letter where he explains how connected he felt to Sherlock and how he wanted to spend more time together, Sherlock admits he feels the same way and that he never saw William as a mere puzzle to solve. He was determined to save William and willingly sacrificed his own life so William wouldn't die alone.[6]

Following the fall, Sherlock is very caring and considerate of William and his needs, wishing to help him in his way forward.[5] Both are also seen to work well together in combat.[7] The closeness of their relationship is teased on multiple occasions by Billy[8][9] and also pointed out by Louis.[10]

Sherlock and William share a deep connection and have made a vow to live together, promising to guide each other in their atonement.[9]

John H. Watson[]

John is Sherlock's best friend, roommate and working partner. John is sometimes put off by Sherlock's quirks and eccentric attitude, but is quick to recognize that Sherlock is a kind-hearted person and wants to help others.[11] The two work well together and both William and Miss Hudson acknowledge that John and Sherlock make a great duo.[11]

Since Sherlock had always been alone, he appreciates John's company and thinks it has been more fun than ever to solve cases ever since he came along.[12] When Mary is introduced as John's fiancée, Sherlock is initially jealous of his friend being taken away, but he eventually overcomes that and confesses he will be happy if John is happy. It's through John that Sherlock realize that that's what friendship is about.[12]

John also cares for him in return and doesn't hesitate to reprimand Sherlock on some occasions, especially when he neglects his own wellbeing and morals.

Even after the fall, Sherlock manages to reach out to John and inform him about his survival. The two remain close friends.

Mycroft Holmes[]

Miss Hudson[]

Miss Hudson is Sherlock's and John's landlady. Sherlock frequently gets reprimanded by Miss Hudson, mostly sparked by Sherlock's failure to pay rent and his eccentric nature. Despite this, the two care about each other and are good friends. When John notices how worried Miss Hudson is about Sherlock, he notes that the two are almost like family.[13]
