Moriarty the Patriot Wiki

P. J. Garrett (ギャレット P. J. Gyaretto) was the best friend of Henry Antrim, who he knew as Billy. He was also the sheriff of Fort Sumner, New Mexico.[1]

Appearance[]

Garrett appears to be a tall young man, being half a head or so taller than Billy. He has short, black hair and similarly dark-colored eyes.

He is seen wearing a white shirt with a darker waistcoat over it, as well as a typical cowboy hat. As an adult, he sports his New Mexico sheriff badge on the left side of his vest. He also had a dark patterned scarf, which is now worn by Billy.

Personality[]

Due to his limited appearance in the series, very little is known about Garrett's personality. However, his actions suggest that he was a selfless and trusting individual.

Biography[]

Garrett was born in a small rural town called Fort Sumner. Since childhood, he was close friends with Billy and the two would always be together.[1]

Fort Sumner was a location where many thugs would reside there. Because they gave his father, the sheriff, and the townspeople a hard time, Garrett and Billy also decided to become lawmen when they grow up.[1]

One day, Garrett and Billy caught a cattle rustler, so Garrett's father gave them an old sheriff badge which the two greatly treasured. Garrett remained determined to protect his home and he eventually became the sheriff of the town. When Billy decided to leave Fort Sumner, Garrett gave him the old badge as proof of their friendship.[1]

Fort Sumner would later become the target of landsharks, led by McGinty. The people became divided between those who wanted to sell the town and those who wanted to fight. Garrett was aware they could not win, so he wanted to hand over the town to save everyone's lives.[1]

This would be disrupted by the return of Billy, who wanted to fight. Garrett appeared as though he didn't care about the town and challenged him to a duel. In reality, he wanted to keep everyone safe and so for Billy's and the people's sake, Garrett shot where he believed Billy would carry the badge, and manipulated the duel so Billy would fall off the cliff. Both of these things would help Billy fake his death and not spark fighting.[1]

Because some townspeople still attacked the landsharks, they announced they would kill everyone. Garrett offered himself up instead, so McGinty had his men violently beat him up to the point of death. Garrett was mockingly displayed in the mainstreet of the town, but because of the injuries, the people couldn't even identify him.[2][1]

Right before his death, he left a letter for Billy. He writes that there was no other way and that he wishes Billy all the best, still considering him a friend.[1]

Origin[]

Garrett is based on a well-known American sheriff from the 1800's called Pat Garrett. He is most famous for having killed the notorious outlaw known as Billy the Kid.

Trivia[]

  • In the letter he left for Billy he signed his name as "P. J. Garrett". Given the full name of the real life figure he's based on, it's likely that his full name is Patrick Jarvis Garrett.[1][3]
