Going out of the mansion, Sherlock notices something and asks Lestrade to let him escape. Sherlock explains he is only interested in solving the mystery and Lestrade can have all the credit for solving the crime. Lestrade decides to do it and while returning with the carriage, he disrupts the horse and allows Sherlock to run away. He meets with John as he had given him a note, telling him that the inspector will allow him to escape and where to wait him. Sherlock then shows that he found a ring in the crime scene. Meanwhile, the killer tells Fred that he lost his ring and he needs it back.

John puts an ad in the newspaper that he found a golden ring and his contacts. William knows that's a trap, but still decides to proceed. Baker Street Irregulars, a group of homeless kids that do variety of jobs led by Wiggins, are hired by Sherlock to be his eyes and ears.

An old woman comes to John and explains that the ring belongs to her daughter, Lucy, and that her name is written on the inside of the ring. She got married last year and if her husband finds out she lost it, she will be in trouble. As the inside do says Lucy, John gives her the ring. Sherlock then follows the old woman, but loses her at a corner. He still manages to see her running and manages to catch up and stop her. They end up fighting and Sherlock sees the old woman face is a mask and half of Fred's face, however, Fred manages to throw Sherlock and escape.

John is worried that they lost their only evidence, but Sherlock tells him he already found the killer. A bit later, he calls him and gives him documents from Lestrade as he asked him to investigate Drebber's past. They found out Drebber had molested women of lower classes and usually settles it with money, but there was an exception, Lucy Ferrier who married Jefferson Hope, a local farmer. She went missing and only her body returned with horrifying bruises. Sherlock reveals that Jefferson killed Drebber and that he is also their carriage driver.

John comments that doesn't mean the driver is the same Jefferson, but Sherlock explains that in front of Drebber's mansion, there were tracks of smaller cab just like this one and it can't be a passenger that comes and leaves with the carriage, as the driver will be a witness. Sherlock asks Jefferson why he killed Drebber in such manner as the plan he was given was likely more elegant. Jefferson confirms that and that he couldn't control himself when he saw Drebber. Jefferson asks Sherlock for a deal. He takes him to a place and reveals that he is sick and doesn't have much left. After having uncovered Drebber's wrongdoings, he wants Sherlock to kill him and points out to Fred, who has been arranged to tell who Jefferson's benefactor is if Sherlock kills Jefferson. He comments that the benefactor is a genius and holds Sherlock in high esteem and even set this crime for he to solve.

Sherlock comments that he is a wanted man right now and if he kills him, he will remain as such, but Jefferson explains that it's been arranged and a witness with excellent testimony will show up. Sherlock takes the gun and points it at Jefferson with John pointing a gun at Sherlock and telling him this is wrong. Sherlock then shoots at Jefferson's legs, commenting there is no way he will kill him and explains that he wants to solve the mysteries himself and not by someone telling him them. Sherlock then takes Jefferson to the police, revealing that he is the killer of Drebber.

William comments that he wished to test Sherlock's quality and if he will resort to any means to achieve his goal. As they deem him worthy, William explains he will be the one to be solving the crime drama they will be staging in London.
