A Rare Breed is the fourth episode of the MORIARTY THE PATRIOT anime series.
Synopsis[]
William begins teaching at a university, and is invited to dinner at the home of the Viscount of Belfor. He and his brothers receive a tour of the viscount's well-kept conservatory, but are taken aback by what they hear of the gardener and his wife.
Summary[]
Benjamin Burton with his wife Michelle and sick child visit Belfor during the night, asking him if his doctor can look at his child as he has a high fever and that the village doctor is not available as he is away for his daughter's wedding. Belfor refuses to help, threatening Burton that if he continues to insist he will lose his job as gardener.
William arrives in Durham and asks an old lady for directions to Goetsbeck Manor. The woman figures out he is the new math teacher and that she heard he comes from noble family. Hearing that, Michelle gives him a bad look and the old woman explains that Michelle hates aristocrats as the viscount let her son die. William then goes to his new manor and after drinking tea made by Louis, he comments that he feels at home. Louis then gives William an invite for dinner from the Viscount of Belfor. They accept and during the dinner with Belfor, they learn that he has heart problems and takes quinine medicine, originally drug meant for malaria. He also explains that quina plant from which is made is grown in his conservatory. After dinner, Belfor invites them to his conservatory to show them all the rare plants he has collected and that his gardener Burton is quite skilled and takes care of the whole garden.
After finishing math lessons, William heads into a bar and sees Burton. He introduces himself and compliments him on the garden and also explains he knows about his son. Burton states that his wife hates Belfor and him for not being able to do anything, but William comments he simply chose to not do anything. Burton start to wonder what he had to do and William explains he also runs consultancy business and may be of help.
The Moriarty brothers visit Belfor and also bring a gift, a snack made of grapefruit marmalade. Belfor is surprised how good it tastes as he didn't knew grapefruits were for eating and likes the bitterness. They recommend him to try juice of a fresh squeezed one and Michelle and Burton are called to squeeze some grapefruits. While cutting them, Michelle sees an opportunity and attempts to stab Belfor, but Burton stops her. Michelle reveals her hate towards Belfor and states she will kill him. Belfor then feels pain in his chest and William gives him his medicine and Burton grapefruit juice to swallow it. Angry, Belfor fires Burton and as he and his wife leave, he starts to feel faint. William then explains that the furanocoumarin in the grapefruit has influence on quinine's mechanism of action, and causes blood pressure to drop sharply. Belfor asks them to call his doctor, but William reminds him of how he refused to help Burton and Michelle. Belfor then realizes this was all a set up. As Belfor dies, William tells him that this was a request from Burton and his punishment.
Burton and Michelle then leave Durham and Albert gives him a letter of recommendation that will help him find gardening work at Queen Mary's Garden.
