Overview
Arterton (アータートン, Ātāton) is the former Chief Inspector of the Criminal Investigation Department in Scotland Yard.[1]
Appearance[]
Arterton is an adult man with black slicked back hair, dark eyes and an extended goatee. He wears a white shirt with a waistcoat and a dark tie, sometimes with a coat as well.
Personality[]
Arterton is a stern and strict person. When frustrated, he is also prone to angry outbursts and is shown yelling at his employees, even slapping Lestrade at one point.[2]
Despite being Chief Inspector, he cares little for justice and the individual person's safety. Arterton focuses on protecting Scotland Yard's control and keeping the public's outrage at bay at all times.[1]
Biography[]
Aterton was appointed as Chief Inspector by the Minister of Interior himself.[1] He has always been known for his rough investigative methods, but he produced results for the Scotland Yard.[3] Unknown to everyone however, he issued several death penalties on false charges.[2]
During the Jack the Ripper murder cases in Whitechapel, Arterton orders the Scotland Yard to prioritize de-arming the district militia and not focus on the victims for now. When, in the public's mind, Jack the Ripper is seemingly still afoot, Arterton again fabricates false evidence and issues an arrest for an innocent man named Dwight.[3]
He plans to get a confession out of Dwight and have him sign a statement before the official trial. He raises security levels and doesn't let anyone see Dwight, including his lawyer.[3] When he later hears about Lestrade, Sherlock and John attempting to access his archive for confidential materials, he rushes over to the scene.[2]
He denies Lestrade's allegations of a false arrest and blocks the door, but Lestrade forces his way through. Arterton gives the order to have him arrested. Unbeknownst to him, his secret account accounting book where he documented his spendings for fabricated evidence was already taken by Bonde and Paterson.[2]
With the accounting book exposed and Arterton's deeds revealed to the public, he is removed from Scotland Yard.[2]
Trivia[]
- In the musical, he worked together with Charles Augustus Milverton. After Arterton's dismissal, Milverton decides to publish all of his false arrests and fabrications, much to Arterton's despair.[4]
